1960s-1980s, Japan
Gorgeous Showa-era round lacquered box in a deep glossy black. Sides of base tapers into the slightly mushrooming lid, giving the appearance of smooth round-ness. The focus of the piece is on the design on the lid; beautiful handpainted crimson peonies and foliage, inlaid with a tiny sprinkling of shell shines through a thick layer of lacquer, creating lovely gradation and depth of colour.
