Vintage Gold Makie Floral Cherry Tamenuri Lacquer Tea Caddy

1950s-1960s, Japan

A base of wood is carved into the tea caddy form, then expertly hand painted with layers of lacquers using the traditional tamenuri technique to produce this elegant vintage Japanese tea caddy. A base coat of black is then covered with smooth dark cherry red, then clear glossy lacquer, and finally hand painted with maki-e patterns of brilliant golden and silver flowers by a master.
