Assorted antique carte de visite from the Victorian era, with interestingly evocative studio shots. Great for studying salon photography, as well as Victorian dress and styles.
Popularized by aristrocratic customs and the onset of portrait photography, subjects would have their photos taken and mounted onto cardboard cards, and have these calling cards sent to households where they wished to pay a visit. The hosts would then pick through the decks they received in the morning, choose their guests for the day, and have their own cards sent back to confirm the meeting.
